Enhance two-way sync functionality and integration test coverage

- Improved the two-way sync pipeline by refining instance renaming logic, ensuring correct handling of directory-format scripts and adjacent meta file renaming.
- Enhanced property persistence for non-Source properties, ensuring proper creation of meta files during updates.
- Introduced comprehensive integration tests for critical two-way sync operations, including instance renames, ClassName transitions, and end-to-end workflows, addressing previously uncovered scenarios.
- Updated logging for better insights during sync operations and file handling, aiding in debugging and user awareness of changes.

## Issue 1 — [HIGH] Standalone script children created as siblings ## Issue 1 — [HIGH] Standalone script children created as siblings
**File:** [src/web/api.rs](src/web/api.rs) — `syncback_added_instance` (line ~528) **File:** `src/web/api.rs` — `syncback_added_instance`
**Problem:** When a new child is added to a standalone script parent (e.g., `MyModule.luau`), the parent path resolves to the directory containing the script, so the child is created as a sibling instead of inside a `MyModule/` directory. **Problem:** When a new child is added to a standalone script parent (e.g., `MyModule.luau`), the parent path resolves to the directory containing the script, so the child is created as a sibling instead of inside a `MyModule/` directory.
**Fix:** After resolving `parent_path` and finding it is a file (not a directory), check if the parent is a script class. If so, convert it to directory format before creating the child: **Fix:** Two shared helpers extract the conversion logic:
1. Create directory `parent_dir/ParentName/` - `convert_standalone_script_to_directory()` — handles `.luau`/`.lua` scripts, moves content to `init.{suffix}.luau`, renames adjacent meta files
2. Move `ParentName.luau` to `ParentName/init.luau` (with correct suffix for Script/LocalScript) - `convert_standalone_instance_to_directory()` — handles `.model.json5`, `.txt`, `.csv`, and other non-script types
3. Delete the old standalone file
4. Remove any adjacent `.meta.json5` (move content to `init.meta.json5` inside the new dir)
5. Set `parent_dir` to the new directory
6. Proceed with normal child creation
The conversion logic already exists in `syncback_update_existing_instance` (lines 620-670). Extract it into a shared helper: Both are called from `syncback_added_instance` when the parent path is a file (not directory).
```rust
fn convert_standalone_to_directory(
&self,
parent_path: &Path,
parent_name: &str,
class_name: &str,
) -> anyhow::Result<PathBuf>
```

## Issue 2 — [HIGH] Non-Source property updates not persisted to disk ## Issue 2 — [HIGH] Non-Source property updates not persisted to disk
**Files:** [src/web/api.rs](src/web/api.rs) — `handle_api_write` (line ~300), [src/change_processor.rs](src/change_processor.rs) — `handle_tree_event` (line ~299) **Files:** `src/web/api.rs` — `handle_api_write`, `syncback_updated_properties`
**Problem:** `ChangeProcessor::handle_tree_event` only writes `Source` to disk. All other property changes (Attributes, etc.) are applied to the in-memory tree only and lost on restart. **Problem:** `ChangeProcessor::handle_tree_event` only writes `Source` to disk. All other property changes (Attributes, etc.) are applied to the in-memory tree only and lost on restart.
**Fix:** In `handle_api_write`, before sending the PatchSet, process non-Source property changes for each `updated_instance`: **Fix:** New method `syncback_updated_properties` on `ApiService`:
1. Look up the instance in the tree to get its `instigating_source` path - Filters non-Source properties using `filter_properties_for_meta` (respects reflection database defaults, skips Ref/UniqueId, filters internal RBX* attributes)
2. Determine the meta file path: - Determines file structure (directory → `init.meta.json5`, standalone script → `Name.meta.json5`, non-script → updates model file in place)
- Scripts in directories: `dir/init.meta.json5` - Uses `merge_or_build_meta` to read existing meta, merge changes, and write back
- Standalone scripts: `parent/Name.meta.json5` - **Post-fix:** Guards against `InstigatingSource::ProjectNode` to prevent writing meta JSON to project files (would corrupt them)
- Model files: update the `.model.json5` directly - **Post-fix:** Derives standalone script meta file base name from `inst_path.file_stem()` with suffix stripping (`.server`, `.client`, `.plugin`, `.local`, `.legacy`) instead of `instance.name()`, preserving Windows-invalid character encoding (e.g., `%3F` for `?`)
3. Read existing meta file (if any), merge changed properties, write back
4. Reuse existing helpers: `filter_properties_for_meta`, `build_meta_object`, `variant_to_json`
Add a new method to `ApiService`:
```rust
fn syncback_updated_properties(
&self,
update: &InstanceUpdate,
tree: &RojoTree,
) -> anyhow::Result<()>
```
This processes properties **other than Source** (Source is handled by ChangeProcessor already). The method:
- Gets the instance from the tree
- Gets `instigating_source.path()`
- Determines if it's a directory or standalone file
- Reads existing meta/model file, merges changes, writes back

## Issue 3 — [MEDIUM] Potential `.model.json` / `.model.json5` duplicates ## Issue 3 — [MEDIUM] Potential `.model.json` / `.model.json5` duplicates
**File:** [src/web/api.rs](src/web/api.rs) — `ExistingFileFormat` enum and `detect_existing_script_format` (line ~864), `syncback_instance_to_path_with_stats` (line ~1362) **File:** `src/web/api.rs` — `ExistingFileFormat`, `detect_existing_script_format`
**Problem:** `detect_existing_script_format` returns just `Standalone` without the actual file path. New files are always created as `.model.json5`, potentially alongside an existing `.model.json`. **Problem:** `detect_existing_script_format` returned `Standalone` without the actual file path. New files were always created as `.model.json5`, potentially alongside an existing `.model.json`.
**Fix:** Make `ExistingFileFormat` carry the detected path: **Fix:** `ExistingFileFormat` now carries the detected path:
```rust ```rust
enum ExistingFileFormat { enum ExistingFileFormat {
None, None,
Standalone(PathBuf), // was: Standalone Standalone(PathBuf),
Directory(PathBuf), // was: Directory Directory(PathBuf),
} }
``` ```
Update `detect_existing_script_format` to return the actual path found. Update all match arms in `syncback_instance_to_path_with_stats` to use the carried path when writing to an existing file: All match arms in `syncback_instance_to_path_with_stats` use the carried path. Format transitions (standalone ↔ directory) clean up old files and meta files.
- For `Standalone(path)`: write to `path` instead of always generating `.model.json5`
- For `Directory(path)`: use `path` for the directory

## Issue 4 — [MEDIUM] Removed instances leave stale window in tree ## Issue 4 — [MEDIUM] Removed instances leave stale window in tree
**File:** [src/web/api.rs](src/web/api.rs) — `handle_api_write` (line ~334), [src/change_processor.rs](src/change_processor.rs) — `handle_tree_event` (line ~249) **Files:** `src/web/api.rs`, `src/change_processor.rs`
**Problem:** `handle_api_write` sends `removed_instances: Vec::new()` even when removals happened. The tree only updates when the file watcher detects deletions. **Problem:** `handle_api_write` sent `removed_instances: Vec::new()` even when removals happened.
**Fix:** **Fix:** Removed IDs are included in the PatchSet. `ChangeProcessor::handle_tree_event` guards file deletion with existence checks and handles both files and directories.
1. In `handle_api_write`, include the removed IDs in the PatchSet:
```rust
tree_mutation_sender
.send(PatchSet {
removed_instances: request.removed.clone(),
added_instances: Vec::new(),
updated_instances,
})
```
1. In `ChangeProcessor::handle_tree_event`, guard file deletion with an existence check to avoid spurious error logs when files were already deleted by `syncback_removed_instance`:
```rust
InstigatingSource::Path(path) => {
if path.exists() {
log::info!("Two-way sync: Removing file {}", path.display());
if let Err(err) = fs::remove_file(path) { ... }
} else {
log::trace!("File already removed: {}", path.display());
}
}
```
Also handle directory removal (currently only `fs::remove_file`, should also check `fs::remove_dir_all`).

## Issue 5 — [MEDIUM] Tree lock held during filesystem I/O ## Issue 5 — [MEDIUM] Tree lock held during filesystem I/O
**File:** [src/web/api.rs](src/web/api.rs) — `handle_api_write` (line ~277) **File:** `src/web/api.rs` — `handle_api_write`
**Problem:** The tree mutex is held during all synchronous filesystem operations in `syncback_added_instance`, blocking other threads. **Problem:** The tree mutex was held during all synchronous filesystem operations.
**Fix:** Split the operation into two phases: **Fix:** Two-phase approach:
- **Phase 1 (with lock):** Gather parent paths, existing children, duplicate sibling cache, removal paths
**Phase 1 — Gather (with lock):** Collect all information needed from the tree: - **Phase 2 (without lock):** Execute all filesystem operations
- Parent paths for each added instance
- Existing child lookups (for dedup)
- Duplicate sibling cache
- Instigating source paths for removed instances
Store results in a `Vec<SyncbackAction>` enum:
```rust
enum SyncbackAction {
CreateNew { added: AddedInstance, parent_dir: PathBuf },
UpdateExisting { added: AddedInstance, existing_path: PathBuf },
Remove { path: PathBuf, is_dir: bool },
Skip { name: String, reason: String },
}
```
**Phase 2 — Execute (without lock):** Release tree lock, then execute all filesystem operations from the collected actions.

## Issue 6 — [LOW] Can't add children to project-defined parents ## Issue 6 — [LOW] Can't add children to project-defined parents
**File:** [src/web/api.rs](src/web/api.rs) — `syncback_added_instance` (line ~520) **File:** `src/web/api.rs` — `syncback_added_instance`
**Problem:** When parent's `instigating_source` is `InstigatingSource::ProjectNode`, `.path()` returns the project file path, not the filesystem directory for children. **Problem:** `InstigatingSource::ProjectNode` returns the project file path, not the filesystem directory.
**Fix:** After getting the instigating source, handle `ProjectNode` separately: **Fix:** Match on `InstigatingSource` variants. For `ProjectNode`, resolve `node.path` (`$path` field) relative to the project file directory.
```rust
let parent_dir = match instigating_source {
InstigatingSource::Path(path) => {
if path.is_dir() { path.clone() } else { path.parent().unwrap().to_path_buf() }
}
InstigatingSource::ProjectNode { path: project_path, node, .. } => {
if let Some(path_node) = &node.path {
let fs_path = path_node.path();
let resolved = if fs_path.is_relative() {
project_path.parent().unwrap().join(fs_path)
} else {
fs_path.to_path_buf()
};
if resolved.is_dir() { resolved } else { resolved.parent().unwrap().to_path_buf() }
} else {
anyhow::bail!(
"Cannot add '{}' - parent '{}' is defined in project file without $path",
added.name, name
);
}
}
};
```
This uses the `node.path` (`$path` field from [src/project.rs](src/project.rs) `ProjectNode` struct, line ~372) resolved relative to the project file directory.

## Issue 7 — [LOW] File watcher echo after syncback ## Issue 7 — [LOW → HIGH] File watcher echo after syncback
**Files:** [src/serve_session.rs](src/serve_session.rs), [src/change_processor.rs](src/change_processor.rs), [src/web/api.rs](src/web/api.rs) **Files:** `src/serve_session.rs`, `src/change_processor.rs`, `src/web/api.rs`
**Problem:** When the API writes files to disk, the file watcher picks them up and creates redundant patches. **Problem:** When the API writes files to disk, the file watcher picks them up and creates redundant re-snapshots and WebSocket messages. Under rapid writes (e.g., 50 rapid syncs), this feedback loop caused the server to become unresponsive.
**Fix:** Add a write-suppression set shared between API and ChangeProcessor: **Fix:** Counter-based echo suppression:
1. Add to `ServeSession`: 1. `ServeSession` holds `suppressed_paths: Arc<Mutex<HashMap<PathBuf, usize>>>` — values are counts, not booleans, to handle rapid writes to the same file correctly
2. `ApiService` gets the map via `serve_session.suppressed_paths()` and calls `suppress_path()` before every `fs::write`, `fs::remove_file`, `fs::remove_dir_all`, and `fs::create_dir_all` across all syncback methods
3. `suppress_path()` inserts both the canonicalized path (for VFS event matching) and the raw path (as fallback), incrementing the counter each time
4. `ChangeProcessor::handle_vfs_event` checks the map before processing — if found, decrements counter (removes at zero), commits the event to VFS for consistency, but skips patching
```rust **Note:** The original plan specified a `HashSet` with one-shot removal. This was changed to `HashMap<PathBuf, usize>` because rapid writes to the same file (e.g., 50 writes to `init.luau`) would insert the same path once but generate 50 VFS events — only the first would be suppressed. The counter ensures all expected events are suppressed.
suppressed_paths: Arc<Mutex<HashSet<PathBuf>>>
```
1. In `syncback_added_instance` / `syncback_removed_instance` / `syncback_instance_to_path_with_stats`, before each `fs::write` / `fs::remove_*` / `fs::create_dir_all`, add the path to the suppression set.
2. In `ChangeProcessor::handle_vfs_event`, check the suppression set before processing:
```rust
fn handle_vfs_event(&self, event: VfsEvent) {
let event_path = match &event {
VfsEvent::Create(p) | VfsEvent::Write(p) | VfsEvent::Remove(p) => p.clone(),
};
// Check and remove from suppression set (one-shot suppression)
{
let mut suppressed = self.suppressed_paths.lock().unwrap();
if suppressed.remove(&event_path) {
self.vfs.commit_event(&event).expect("Error applying VFS change");
log::trace!("Suppressed echo event for {}", event_path.display());
return;
}
}
// ... normal processing ...
}
```
Still commit the event to VFS (so VFS stays consistent), but skip patch computation and message broadcasting.

## Issue 8 — [INFO] Rename/ClassName persistence ## Issue 8 — [INFO] Rename/ClassName persistence
**File:** [src/change_processor.rs](src/change_processor.rs) — `handle_tree_event` (line ~287) **File:** `src/change_processor.rs` — `handle_tree_event`
**Problem:** Name and ClassName changes are logged as warnings and only applied to in-memory tree. **Problem:** Name and ClassName changes were logged as warnings and only applied to in-memory tree.
**Fix for renames:** Replace `log::warn!("Cannot rename instances yet.")` with: **Fix for renames:** File/directory rename via `fs::rename`, plus adjacent meta file rename.
1. Get instance's `instigating_source` path **Fix for ClassName changes:** Script-to-script class transitions rename the init file extension. Cross-category changes (script ↔ non-script) log a warning.
2. Compute new path based on new name (preserve extension/format)
3. Rename file or directory on disk (`fs::rename`)
4. Update any adjacent meta file name (e.g., `OldName.meta.json5` -> `NewName.meta.json5`)
**Fix for ClassName changes:** Replace `log::warn!("Cannot change ClassName yet.")` with: **Post-fix (directory-format scripts):** The original implementation checked `path.file_name().starts_with("init.")` to detect init files, but for directory-format scripts the `InstigatingSource::Path` is the *directory* (e.g., `src/MyModule/`), not the init file. This caused `is_init` to always be false, and the code attempted to rename the directory to a file name. Fixed by adding `find_init_file()` which searches the directory for known init file candidates in priority order.
1. For script classes: compute old and new file extensions **Post-fix (continue → Option flow):** The `None` branch of `find_init_file()` originally used `continue`, which exited the entire `for update in &patch_set.updated_instances` loop iteration. This skipped all subsequent processing for that update, including `changed_metadata` handling and the `changed_properties` loop that writes Source to disk. If a user changed both ClassName and Source in a single update, and the init file couldn't be found, the Source change was silently dropped (data loss). Fixed by restructuring to `Option`-based control flow: `init_result` is `Option<(PathBuf, PathBuf)>`, with `if let Some(...)` doing the rename and `else` logging the warning — the rest of the update always runs.
2. Rename the file (e.g., `Foo.server.luau` -> `Foo.client.luau`)
3. For non-script to script or vice versa: convert between `.model.json5` and `.luau` formats
ClassName changes are complex — scope the initial implementation to script class transitions only (Script <-> LocalScript, etc.) and log a warning for cross-category changes (script to non-script).

Restarting Rojo serve fixes it. **Reproduction:** Cursor agent modifies a file, user clicks "undo", file is deleted and immediately recreated. Rojo thinks the file is deleted even though it exists on disk.
**Root cause analysis — three contributing factors:** **Root cause — three contributing factors:**
```mermaid 1. `commit_event(Remove)` unwatched the path, preventing future event detection
sequenceDiagram 2. Create/Write events silently dropped at `trace` level when `canonicalize` failed
participant Editor as Cursor_Editor 3. Race condition: `notify_debouncer_full` could coalesce rapid Remove+Create into just Remove
participant Notify as notify_debouncer
participant Tree as RojoTree
Note over Notify: Create event LOST
CP->>CP: commit_event: unwatch(path)
Note over CP: File doesnt exist YET
CP->>Tree: remove instance
Note over Tree: Instance gone forever
Note over FS: File reappears on disk
Note over CP: No Create event arrives
```
1. **Pedantic INFO logging** for all VFS events and decisions (canonicalize results, patch application summaries, path resolution)
2. **Stop unwatching on Remove** in `memofs::VfsInner::commit_event` — stale watches are harmless
**Factor 1: `commit_event(Remove)` unwatches the path** ([crates/memofs/src/lib.rs](crates/memofs/src/lib.rs) line 239) 3. **Recovery check** in `compute_and_apply_changes` — before removing an instance, verify the path is genuinely gone from the real filesystem via `std::fs::metadata` (bypassing VFS state)
4. **Retry canonicalize** for Create/Write events — 50ms delay then retry, warn if still fails
```rust 5. **Post-Remove sweep** via `pending_recovery` — paths removed from the tree are re-checked after 200ms; if the file has reappeared, trigger a re-snapshot. Runs after every event and on a 500ms periodic timer.
fn commit_event(&mut self, event: &VfsEvent) -> io::Result<()> {
if let VfsEvent::Remove(path) = event {
let _ = self.backend.unwatch(path); // <-- problematic
}
Ok(())
}
```
If the removed path was directly watched (in the `watches` set), it gets unwatched from `notify`. When the path is recreated, the parent's recursive watch *might* cover it, but on Windows this is unreliable for detecting the recreation event.
**Factor 2: Create/Write events silently dropped when `canonicalize` fails** ([src/change_processor.rs](src/change_processor.rs) line 183)
```rust
Err(_) => {
log::trace!( // <-- INVISIBLE at normal log levels
"Skipping create/write event for {:?} - path no longer exists",
path
);
Vec::new()
}
```
On Windows, `canonicalize` calls `GetFinalPathNameByHandleW`, which can fail if the file is still being written/locked by another process. The Create event is silently dropped at `trace` level — completely invisible.
**Factor 3: Genuine race condition between file operations and event processing.** The `notify_debouncer_full` with 50ms timeout can coalesce a rapid Remove+Create into just a Remove on Windows if `ReadDirectoryChangesW` misses the recreation or the debouncer's cache only tracks the removal.
**Fix — four layers of defense:**
### Layer 1: Pedantic INFO-level logging for ALL file watcher decisions
Change ALL event and decision logging in `handle_vfs_event` from `debug`/`trace` to `info`:
```rust
fn handle_vfs_event(&self, event: VfsEvent) {
// Log EVERY event at INFO for diagnostics
match &event {
VfsEvent::Create(path) => log::info!("VFS event: CREATE {}", path.display()),
VfsEvent::Write(path) => log::info!("VFS event: WRITE {}", path.display()),
VfsEvent::Remove(path) => log::info!("VFS event: REMOVE {}", path.display()),
_ => log::info!("VFS event: OTHER {:?}", event),
}
// ...
// Log EVERY decision point:
// - "Canonicalize succeeded: {path}" / "Canonicalize FAILED: {path} - {err}"
// - "apply_patches found IDs: {ids:?} at path: {path}"
// - "compute_and_apply_changes: path exists={exists}, result={added/removed/updated}"
// - "Patch applied: {summary}"
}
```
Also log at INFO in `compute_and_apply_changes`:
- Whether `vfs.metadata(path)` found the file or not
- Whether the snapshot produced changes
- What instances were added/removed/updated
### Layer 2: Stop unwatching paths on Remove events
In [crates/memofs/src/lib.rs](crates/memofs/src/lib.rs), remove the unwatch from `commit_event`:
```rust
fn commit_event(&mut self, event: &VfsEvent) -> io::Result<()> {
// NOTE: We intentionally do NOT unwatch on Remove.
// The path may be recreated immediately (editor undo), and unwatching
// causes future events to be missed. Stale watches are harmless —
// notify silently ignores events for non-existent paths, and the
// watch will be cleaned up when the parent is unwatched.
Ok(())
}
```
This is safe because:
- `notify` silently handles watches on non-existent paths (no errors)
- The parent directory's recursive watch provides the actual coverage
- Stale entries in the `watches` set are harmless overhead
### Layer 3: Recovery check after Remove events that cause instance removal
In `compute_and_apply_changes` ([src/change_processor.rs](src/change_processor.rs) line 391), after the instance would be removed, verify the path doesn't exist on the REAL filesystem (bypassing any VFS state):
```rust
Ok(None) => {
// Path not found in VFS. Before removing, verify it's truly gone
// from the REAL filesystem. On Windows, rapid delete+recreate can
// cause Remove events where the file has already been recreated.
if std::fs::metadata(path).is_ok() {
log::info!(
"Recovery: path {} was reported removed but exists on disk. Re-snapshotting.",
path.display()
);
// File was recreated — re-snapshot instead of removing
let snapshot = match snapshot_from_vfs(&metadata.context, vfs, path) {
Ok(snapshot) => snapshot,
Err(err) => {
log::error!("Recovery snapshot error: {:?}", err);
return None;
}
};
let patch_set = compute_patch_set(snapshot, tree, id);
apply_patch_set(tree, patch_set)
} else {
// Path is genuinely gone
let mut patch_set = PatchSet::new();
patch_set.removed_instances.push(id);
apply_patch_set(tree, patch_set)
}
}
```
Note: This uses `std::fs::metadata` directly (not `vfs.metadata`) because the VFS may have stale state after `commit_event(Remove)` was called. The real filesystem is the source of truth.
### Layer 4: Retry canonicalize failures for Create/Write events
In `handle_vfs_event`, when `canonicalize` fails for a Create/Write event, retry with a short delay instead of silently dropping:
```rust
VfsEvent::Create(path) | VfsEvent::Write(path) => {
match self.vfs.canonicalize(&path) {
Ok(canonical_path) => self.apply_patches(canonical_path),
Err(err) => {
log::info!(
"VFS: canonicalize failed for {} ({}), retrying...",
path.display(), err
);
// Retry after brief delay — file may still be locked by editor
std::thread::sleep(std::time::Duration::from_millis(50));
match self.vfs.canonicalize(&path) {
Ok(canonical_path) => {
log::info!("VFS: retry succeeded for {}", path.display());
self.apply_patches(canonical_path)
}
Err(err2) => {
log::warn!(
"VFS: Create/Write event DROPPED for {} after retry — \
canonicalize failed: {}. File may be desynchronized!",
path.display(), err2
);
Vec::new()
}
}
}
}
}
```
### Layer 5 (post-Remove sweep): After processing a Remove event that caused instance removal, schedule a filesystem re-check
Add a `pending_recovery` field to `JobThreadContext`:
```rust
struct JobThreadContext {
tree: Arc<Mutex<RojoTree>>,
vfs: Arc<Vfs>,
message_queue: Arc<MessageQueue<AppliedPatchSet>>,
/// Paths recently removed that should be re-checked after a delay
pending_recovery: Mutex<Vec<(PathBuf, std::time::Instant)>>,
}
```
After each event is processed in the `select!` loop, check `pending_recovery` for paths older than 200ms. For each, verify the path on the real filesystem and trigger a re-snapshot if it exists:
```rust
loop {
select! {
recv(vfs_receiver) -> event => {
task.handle_vfs_event(event?);
task.process_pending_recoveries();
},
// ... other arms ...
default(Duration::from_millis(500)) => {
// Periodic check even when no events arrive
task.process_pending_recoveries();
}
}
}
```
This catches the case where the Remove event was processed correctly (file was genuinely gone at that moment), but the file was recreated shortly after, and no Create event was generated.

## Testing Strategy ## Post-Implementation Fixes
- Add integration tests in [tests/tests/serve.rs](tests/tests/serve.rs) for each fix These issues were discovered during CI runs and agent review after the initial implementation.
- Issue 1: Test adding a child to a standalone script via the write API, verify directory conversion
- Issue 2: Test property update persistence, verify meta file creation
- Issue 3: Test with existing `.model.json` files, verify no duplicates created
- Issue 4: Test removal appears in tree immediately after write response
- Issue 7: Test that syncback doesn't cause redundant WebSocket messages
- Issue 9: Test rapid delete+recreate of files, verify instance survives in tree. Test with both individual files and directories. Verify INFO logs capture all events.
- Use existing test utilities from [tests/rojo_test/serve_util.rs](tests/rojo_test/serve_util.rs)
- Existing stress tests in [crates/memofs/src/std_backend.rs](crates/memofs/src/std_backend.rs) (`stress_create_delete_recreate_cycles`, `stress_undo_redo_simulation`) provide unit-level coverage for the debouncer
### Fix: .model.json5 → init.meta.json5 conversion loses inline children
**File:** `src/web/api.rs` — `convert_standalone_instance_to_directory`
**Problem:** The `.model.json5` format supports a `children` field for inline child instances, but `init.meta.json5` (parsed as `DirectoryMetadata`) does not. The original code copied raw bytes, silently losing inline children.
**Fix:** Parse the `.model.json5` as JSON and extract only the fields `DirectoryMetadata` supports (`className`, `properties`, `attributes`, `ignoreUnknownInstances`, `id`). If inline `children` are present and non-empty, log a warning. Falls back to raw-copy only if JSON parsing fails.
### Fix: Meta file path uses decoded name instead of encoded file stem
**File:** `src/web/api.rs` — `syncback_updated_properties`
**Problem:** Used `instance.name()` (decoded, e.g., `What?`) to construct the adjacent meta file path. On Windows with `encodeWindowsInvalidChars` enabled, the actual file uses encoded names (e.g., `What%3F.luau`). This mismatch caused `fs::write` failures on Windows and meta files that wouldn't be found when reading.
**Fix:** Derive the base name from `inst_path.file_stem()` with known script suffix stripping (`.server`, `.client`, `.plugin`, `.local`, `.legacy`), matching exactly what `AdjacentMetadata::read_and_apply_all` does.

## Commits (unpushed)
1. **`0968e742`** — Initial implementation of all 9 issues (core syncback methods, VFS recovery, logging, memofs change)
2. **`f4f07744`** — Refactor suppression from `HashSet` to counter-based `HashMap<PathBuf, usize>`; wire `suppress_path()` into `ApiService` before all fs operations
3. **`f38c96e1`** — Add `find_init_file()` for directory-format scripts; fix ClassName rename targeting directory instead of init file
4. **`e6944e31`** — Fix `continue` → `Option` flow in ClassName handler; guard `syncback_updated_properties` against `ProjectNode` sources
5. **`dc1a9129`** — Parse `.model.json5` → `init.meta.json5` field extraction; derive meta file base name from `file_stem()` instead of `instance.name()`
## Testing
- **Integration tests** in `tests/tests/serve.rs` cover syncback operations (add, remove, update, format transitions) — added in prior pushes, not part of this diff
- **Format transition tests** in `tests/tests/syncback_format_transitions.rs` cover standalone ↔ directory conversions including a 50-rapid-sync stress test — added in prior pushes, not part of this diff
- **Test utility** `post_api_write` in `tests/rojo_test/serve_util.rs` — reqwest timeout increased to 60s (this diff)
- **Stress tests** in `crates/memofs/src/std_backend.rs` provide unit-level coverage for the debouncer — pre-existing
- **CI result:** 606 Rust tests passed, 397 plugin tests passed, 0 failures

# Two-Way Sync Integration Tests
## Intent
The plugin's two-way sync (`POST /api/write`) should eventually supersede the `rojo syncback` command entirely. The goal is continuous bidirectional sync: connect to Studio, accept changes, and work in an external IDE while others work in Studio. These tests validate the core primitives that make this possible.
## Coverage Gaps Addressed
The existing tests cover format transitions (standalone/directory) and stress testing but have **zero coverage** for:
1. **Instance rename** (changed_name) — file/directory rename on disk, adjacent meta file rename
2. **ClassName transitions** (changed_class_name) — script type changes, init file detection in directories
3. **Non-Source property persistence** (changed_properties except Source) — writing to meta files
4. **Instance removal with meta file cleanup** — deleting files plus their adjacent `.meta.json5`
5. **End-to-end round-trip** — add instance, modify it, rename it, verify filesystem at each step
## Test Fixture
Use existing `syncback_write` fixture (`rojo-test/serve-tests/syncback_write/`). It has a minimal project: `ReplicatedStorage` mapped to `src/` with one existing `existing.luau` (ModuleScript). This is ideal for testing write operations without interference from complex file structures.
For rename tests, we also use `syncback_format_transitions` which has directory-format scripts with init files.
## New Test File
Add tests to `tests/tests/two_way_sync.rs` (new file). Register it via `tests/end_to_end.rs`.
All tests follow the established pattern:
- `run_serve_test(fixture_name, |session, _redactions| { ... })`
- Find parent ID via `get_api_rojo()` + `get_api_read()`
- Construct `WriteRequest` with `added`, `updated`, or `removed`
- Call `session.post_api_write()`
- Assert filesystem state
## Tests
### 1. `update_source_writes_to_disk` — Verify the basic Source write path
Send an `InstanceUpdate` with `changed_properties: { Source: "-- new content" }` for the existing `existing.luau`. Verify `fs::read_to_string` returns the new content. This is the most fundamental two-way sync operation.
### 2. `update_non_source_property_creates_meta_file` — Issue 2 coverage
Send an `InstanceUpdate` with a non-Source property (Attributes) for `existing.luau`. Verify:
- `existing.meta.json5` is created adjacent to `existing.luau`
- The meta file contains the attribute value
- `existing.luau` itself is unchanged
### 3. `update_properties_for_directory_script_writes_init_meta` — Issue 2 directory path
Use `syncback_format_transitions` fixture. Send property update for a directory-format script (`DirModuleWithChildren`). Verify `init.meta.json5` is created inside the directory.
### 4. `rename_standalone_script` — Issue 8 rename coverage
Add a new ModuleScript `OldName` via `added`, wait for it to appear on disk. Then send an `InstanceUpdate` with `changed_name: Some("NewName")`. Verify:
- `OldName.luau` is gone
- `NewName.luau` exists with same content
### 5. `rename_preserves_adjacent_meta_file` — Issue 8 meta rename
Add a ModuleScript, send a property update to create its meta file, then rename it. Verify both the `.luau` and `.meta.json5` files are renamed together.
### 6. `classname_change_standalone_module_to_script` — Issue 8 ClassName coverage
Add a ModuleScript `MyModule`, then send `changed_class_name: Some("Script")`. Verify:
- `MyModule.luau` is gone
- `MyModule.server.luau` exists
### 7. `classname_change_directory_script_renames_init_file` — Issue 8 directory ClassName
Use `syncback_format_transitions`. Send `changed_class_name` for `DirModuleWithChildren` (ModuleScript -> Script). Verify:
- Directory still exists
- `init.luau` is gone
- `init.server.luau` exists
- Children still exist
### 8. `remove_instance_deletes_file_and_meta` — Issue 4 removal cleanup
Add a ModuleScript, create its meta file via property update, then remove it via `removed`. Verify both the `.luau` file and `.meta.json5` are deleted.
### 9. `remove_directory_instance` — Issue 4 directory removal
Use `syncback_format_transitions`. Remove a directory-format instance. Verify the entire directory is deleted recursively.
### 10. `round_trip_add_modify_rename_remove` — End-to-end workflow
This test validates the complete lifecycle that makes two-way sync viable as a `syncback` replacement:
1. **Add** a new Script `PlayerHandler` with children
2. Verify directory created on disk
3. **Modify** its Source property
4. Verify file content updated
5. **Rename** it to `GameHandler`
6. Verify directory renamed
7. **Remove** it
8. Verify directory deleted
### 11. `property_update_skips_project_node_instances` — Post-fix coverage
Send property update for a Service (ReplicatedStorage) which has `InstigatingSource::ProjectNode`. Verify it does NOT corrupt the project file. The project file content should be unchanged.
### 12. `echo_suppression_prevents_redundant_patches` — Issue 7 coverage
Add a new instance, then immediately read the message queue. Count the WebSocket messages — there should be exactly one patch notification, not two (which would indicate echo from the VFS picking up the file write).
## Key Implementation Details
- `InstanceUpdate` requires `UstrMap<Option<Variant>>` for `changed_properties`. Import `rbx_dom_weak::{ustr, UstrMap}`.
- Finding existing instance IDs: read tree via `get_api_read(root_id)`, traverse `instances` to find by class/name.
- After `post_api_write`, sleep 200-500ms for change processor to handle VFS events.
- Use `fs::read_to_string` to verify file content, `fs::metadata` to verify existence.
- For rename/ClassName tests, the instance ID in `InstanceUpdate` must match the ID the server assigned (found via `get_api_read` after the initial add).
## File Registration
Add `mod two_way_sync;` to `tests/tests/mod.rs` (or the test harness entry point `tests/end_to_end.rs`).
